Lean manufacturing is focused on eliminating waste. This philosophy can have significant impact on improving the environmental performance of manufacturing organizations as well. Lean principles and tools could be used to enable more sustainable practices in the manufacturing companies. The main aim of this paper is to analyse how this can be achieved and also assess the current state of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) manufacturing companies. The awareness and maturity of lean and green principles combination is captured through the use of closed questionnaires. Based on a comprehensive literature review and the questionnaire responses, the drivers and barriers for such integration in the KSA manufacturing sector are discussed. Overall, this paper helps in identifying the link between green and lean principles from a practical point of view, and provides the basis of a conceptual framework that will allow the integration of green objectives into lean implementation programmes.
