Lean manufacturing implementation in companies pose a number of challenges to companies throughout the world. When successfully done it can bring many benefits to the companies. Although lean principles, tools and strategies for implementation are widely known and well documented, companies still struggle. This is more evident in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in developing countries. In the present paper the challenges for the SMEs in their lean journey are discussed. Furthermore, the focus is within the UAE manufacturing sector. The purpose is to determine the extent to which the main principles of lean manufacturing are understood and adopted. A structured questionnaire was developed and circulated to a large number of UAE manufacturing companies. Based on the literature review and questionnaire findings, the degree of implementing lean manufacturing in UAE is assessed and discussed against literature review findings.
