The safe embarking and disembarking of passengers within rail is a critical component of both train operator efficiency and customer satisfaction. The orderly transfer of passengers from the platform train interface (PTI) is impacted by a host of factors, ranging from platform and train capacity, passenger demographics, environmental conditions and train operations. We review current approaches to reducing dwell time and other challenges within the platform-train interface. Finally, we investigate and develop a novel strategy for the optimal seat allocation of passengers such that we can reduce the dwell time spent at the platform train interface along with a number of other factors. This is based upon a multi-agent based modelling and simulation approach.
