Introduction: Pressure measurements are being used to understand the brace working mechanism, because the forces exerted by a brace cause correction of the scoliotic curve. Wiley et al reported that a group of patients who were not compliant to wearing their brace had significantly less correction of the curve at brace delivery than patients who wear their brace permanent or temporarily.
The aim of the study: We use the brace 2000 since 2004 but with the new Maastricht brace we wanted to achieve an higher acceptance and comfort. Therefor adjusted the brace 2000 by using pressure measurements.
Material and Methods: The effectiveness of the adjustments on the brace 2000 were checked by pressure measurements. Finally four patients with idiopathic scoliosis have worn the Boston brace and the new brace. Effectiveness of these two braces were evaluated with pressure measurements and spinal radiographs.
Results: 8 adjustments were performed on the thoracal pelotte of the brace 2000. One of the adjustments gave the maximum pressure of 41,3 kPa at the apex of the thoracal curve. We used an elastic thoracic brace band in stead of a thoracic brace pad. We have tried to get a higher acceptance and comfort of the brace. And therfor it could improve the compiance.
Conclusion: We introduce the Maastricht brace with a better optimal personal fitting and esthetic design than the former braces used in our hospital.
