Introduction: In correcting the thoracic scoliosis, one of the targets is shoulder balance restoration. Shoulder balance correction in coronal plane has been well evaluated. Attention to the correction on transverse plane, however, has not been well recognized and the methods in evaluating were lacking.
Objectives: To develop radiographic parameters for the evaluation of transverse plane shoulder balance in AIS patients.
Materials and Methods: 30 AIS patients with a major right thoracic curve were included. Computerized tomography (CT) scan on upper thoracic was carried out then three radiographic parameters angle of shoulder rotation (ASR), shoulder length and scapula angle were defined and measured. Angle of trunk rotation was measured on . Correlation analysis was made between ASR and other radiographic parameters.
Result: All patients had a right shoulder pronation in this study. The ASR ranged from 1° to 9.9°. The length from lateral board of shoulder to median line was longer in right side than that of left side (P<0.05). The right scapula angle was smaller than the left (P<0.05). The ASR showed significant association with the ratio of bilateral scapula angle (r=0.77, P<0.01) but no association with other radiographic parameters (P>0.05).
Conclusion and Significance: There is a shoulder imbalance on transverse plane in patients with thoracic AIS. Both angle of shoulder rotation and ratio of bilateral scapula angle could be used to show the shoulder balance in transverse plane.
